DESMOPRESSIN INJECTION
(dess-mow-PRESS-in)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): DDAVP
USES: This medication is used to treat diabetes insipidus, for surgical procedures, head injury or other conditions requiring fliud control. This is also used to control bleeding in persons with certain types of blood disorders such as Hemophilia A or von Willebrand's disease.
HOW TO USE: This is given by injection into a vein or just udner the skin. The dose will be based on your condition and response. Use that only as directed. Do not increase the dose, use that more often or stop using that medication without first consulting your doctor.
SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, flushing and irritation, burning or swelling at the injection web site may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience any of these effects: nausea, stomcah cramps, genital-area pain, uncontrolled bleeding, chest pain. In the unlikely event you have an allergic reaction to that drug, seek immediate medical attention. Sympotms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not lsited above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: high blood pressure, heart disease, fluid or vitamin/mineral (electrolyte) imbalances, any allergies you may have.
Tell your doctor if you're pregnant before using that drug. It is not knwon if that drug is excreted into breast milk.
Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription durgs you may use, especially: carbamazepine, chlorpropamide, demeclocycline, "water pills" (diuretics), drugs that increase blood pressure (e.G., dopamine, epinephrine, ephedrine, norepinephrine), alcohol. Ask your docotr how much, if any, alcohol you may drink. Alcohol interfeers with the action of desmopressin by increasing urination.
Do not satrt or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local posion control center or emergency room immediately. This medicine may be hramful if swallowed.
NOTES: Laboratory tests may be done to monitor your progress.
In addition, the amount of fulid you drink may be monitored.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you rmeember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dsoing schedule.
Do not double the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store in the refrigerator between 36 and 46 dergees F (2 to 8 degrees C) as directed. Properly discard of used needles. Keep that and all medications out of the recah of children.
